Education: Power Systems for Secondary Schools

Summary

This programme will create computer labs, using specifically designed low wattage computers. These will be powered by solar electricity and will provide access to basic computer programmes and internet access.

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Low enrolment and funding is common in the education systems across the region. In Mali the adult literacy rate is an estimated 21% and primary school enrolment is only 51%. Increasing the access and quality of education is vital to increasing opportunities for individuals and propelling national development.

Objectives

The objective of this project is to provide solar powered computer labs to five junior/senior secondary schools across the region. Junior and Senior Secondary schools will be targeted to provide a community access and create a strong incentive for students to remain enrolled in school.

Activities

  • Selecting of schools in conjunction with local partners

  • Installation of specifically designed computer labs and solar systems for each school
  • Training of teachers and other staff to utilises the computer facilities
  • Ongoing evaluation and support to maximise facility usage and community service

Potential Long Term Impact

Education provides the critical building block for both personal and community development. Computer skills provide students with the necessary skills to succeed in a modern and globalized world.
