Rokupa Government Hospital is situated in eastern Freetown and before the EFO solar installation they relied on expensive and noisy generator power from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm in the day. After 3:00 pm they couldn’t afford to run the generator and this was a serious problem considering that the night time hours, when light is most needed, they didn’t have access to electricity.

Jalloh, Mohamed, Idrissa, Sumu and Sheka from EFO installed a 2,625 Watt system (15x175 Watt panels) that provides lighting for the whole hospital, in December 2010.

The solar power is currently being used to power six wards, the corridors, a new laboratory and a labour room as well as providing outdoor lights for security. The system uses LED lights which are durable and will reduce maintenance and replacement costs.
