In November and December 2010 EFO installed a 4725 Watt system in Kailahun.

Before the system was installed, the staff told Jalloh, EFO Programme Manager, that they could only afford to use their generator until12:00 at night which meant that they were not well prepared for any emergencies such as child birth at night. The solar system now provides lighting for the whole hospital including a male ward, a female ward, a children’s ward, a maternity ward, a laboratory and an eye clinic 24/7. The corridors and outside areas are also lit up providing security at night.

The state of the art system uses LED lights which offer greater durability and longevity significantly reducing maintenance and replacement costs. This project has the potential to be expanded to all Government Hospitals across the country which will have a positive impact on the quality of healthcare in Sierra Leone.
